Some of the newer flight sims like DCS and IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad have better AI, but those are more hardcore flight sims and offer a lot less content for a much heftier price. The only downside to 1946 as a singleplayer game is that the AI isn't the best at flying, and are kinda predictable. There will be some initial effort required with setting up the joystick and mods, but you can easily tune down the difficulty settings so you don't have to worry about engine controls and also make it easier to spot aircraft. With 1946 installed and HSFX installed, you'll have new toys to play and learn in singleplayer for months or years. If you don't have a joystick there are some really cheap ones that are more than good enough for a novice player, like the these: I would highly advice against trying to play it with mouse and keyboard though. Heck, it didnt even come with a diagram, so I dont know what all the buttons are called. I only bought a joystick yesterday, and I have no idea what Im doing with it. It's a fairly old game, but the flight model is still very decent and much better than anything War Thunder offers. Just wondering if someone has a 'premade' settings file for the Logitech Extreme 3D joystick. If you get that and install one of the big mod packs like HSFX the amount of content and flyable planes you get for your money is absolutely staggering. If you're looking for an entry level single player experience in a flying sim I don't think I can recommend IL-2: 1946 enough. Sadly, the only other flying game that's decently competent that has similar mouse controls to War Thunder is World of Warplanes, and that's obviously not a single player game.
